Bring OttLite Into the Kitchen

My sister is a chef at heart, always trying a new recipe and making desserts comparable to the finest of restaurants. When she discovered that I worked at OttLite, she raved about how great the lighting is for her puzzles and sewing projects. Surprisingly, even though her creativity extends beyond paper and glue, she hasn’t used OttLite in the kitchen. Instead she has been using regular LED stick up lights under the cabinets that can be purchased from most home improvement stores. The drawback she mentioned with these lights is the blue light they cast, making it impossible for her to tell whether or not her batter is the correct yellow. As important as matching thread to cloth, a batter’s color can dramatically change the look of a feast from tantalizing to unappetizing.

I suggested several of our OttLite bulbs as replacements for her regular kitchen lights. In addition, our OttLite task lamps (loved by our crafters) can assist in providing her with the detailed, focused lighting needed to achieve the correct color in her baking batter.

To inspire you to use OttLite lighting in your kitchen, I’m including one of my sister’s beloved recipes. Her family favorite Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies - Recipe

o 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
o 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
o 7 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temp)
o 1/4 cup granulated sugar
o 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
o 1 large egg
o 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
o 3 tablespoons sour cream
o 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
o 3/4 cup milk-chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together flour, salt and baking soda. Beat butter and sugars with a mixer on medium-high speed until PALE and fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in 2 batches, alternating with sour cream, and beat until just combined. Stir in chocolate chips by hand. Cover and freeze for 10 minutes.

2. Using a #60 Disher or a tablespoon, drop dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment, spacing about 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly. Bake until centers are set and cookies are pale golden brown, 12 to 14 minutes.

For those of us who are blessed with the ability to create masterpieces in the kitchen, whether by pan or cookie sheet, OttLite lighting only makes the job easier and more enjoyable.

Have a Hobby You Want to Share?

For those of you who have a passion whether it be photography, craft, cinema… it is not always easy to meet people with the same interests as you. It’s good to have friends with different backgrounds. However it’s also nice to meet people with whom you can actually share about your passion. This is what Meetup.com is for. It’s a really cool website that I recently discovered. You can find groups of interests in your area such as Crafters, Movie Fans, Monopoly Players or Scrapbook Lovers. Usually you don’t have to pay to be a member which is good in this economy!

Some of these groups can meet from very often (weekly), to more rarely (monthly). For my part, I am already part of 30 groups on Meetup, because the more groups you are in, the more opportunities you have to go out & share the things you love with similar people. Here is an example of a scrapbook group in the San Francisco area.

My Trip to JoAnns

Hi everyone! It's Anne-Laure again...remember me, right? I am the French student doing an internship at OttLite this year where you may have read one of my blog posts in the past. So upon working my internship at OttLite I decided what better way to get to know more about the company than to go to our biggest retail partner : The Crafter's Favorite Jo-Ann's.

When I entered Jo-Anns, I was really impressed by the diversity of products displayed for everyone to enjoy their hobbies. There is something for everyone’s taste: sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, quilting and much much more…My mother knits but I never had an artistic flair, and am very bad at crafting. However, I said to myself : "So what ? Let’s give it a try". So here I am, lost in the immensity of Jo-Anns, and mesmerized by all the products...I decide to check out the scrapbook array.

I chose scrapbooking as it seemed like a good place for a beginner to start in the crafting world. After a few minutes I am lost in the labyrinth that is Jo-Anns, surrounded by so much decorating stuff that Father Christmas would be by far beaten. You see a Sponge Bob sheet, you run towards it but you’re stopped in your race by the brilliance of a satin ribbon, … and you imagine all the possibilities, stunned by the number of possible matches.

Then I went to see our lamps. Woohoo... we really have a huge array at Jo-Anns! Our OttLite Lamps were everywhere! They even had little interactive screens where we can see videos demonstrating our products. It was all very, very cool! After having cleaned out the store, I returned home to buckle down my new career in scrapbooking.

This was really important for me because I am far from my friends and family for a year, so I want to have nice stuff with photos of them on to hang up on the wall. I’ve never done scrapbooking before, however it is very easy and I was quickly addicted. Here are some of the things I created under my OttLite of course:

Silk painting and OttLite

Developing our Facebook Page is really rewarding because it gives our customers a place to share what their work & us why they love OttLite! That's how we got in touch with Angel Ray. She specializes in Silk painting, a crafting domain few of us have heard about.

Angel explained to us how she came to silk painting and how OttLite really helped her business to blossom :)

"I was a Fine Art major in school, emphasis on painting. After school, I pursued graphic design, which is still my day job. Slowly I became starved of creative self-expression and needed an outlet. I found a silk painting class being taught by Dr. Rosemary Cohen. As soon as my brush hit the silk, I was hooked – found my creative outlet! Even more than an outlet, I found my passion and dream. Silk Painting is it!"

"After dabbling in silk painting for a few years, I finally went for it and did my first show in May 2009. Shortly afterwards, I opened the doors to my Etsy online shop, and joined the amazing CCCOE team as well. I quickly learned as an online seller, you could have the most beautiful product in the world, but if you don’t have amazing pictures, it won’t sell! I asked my talented photographer friend for tips and she told me how it was really all about the lighting. Lighting. Real daylight was the best, she said. Easier said than done, I said."

"I can only paint on the weekends, in the sunshine (my studio is a rooftop deck). So those valuable hours of afternoon are my only time to paint. I whined to my CCCOE teamsters about not having enough daylight hours to paint and do my photo-shoots, and then one of them mentioned, 'Have you tried the OttLite?' and sent me the link. That’s when everything changed for me. I immediately started experimenting and re-shooting my scarves."

"They looked great!! Not glaring, but nearly as bright as real sunlight, and the photos did pick up the subtle shine and texture of my different silks. I had about 10 scarves that had been finished for weeks, but I had kept missing my 'sunlight time window' so I couldn’t list them in my shop yet. OttLite in the UK!

We're having a great time at the Stitches Show in Birmingham, England. I'm here with our UK Managing Director, David Hames who took me out for fish and chips last night :-)

The OttLite booth is shining bright with our newest products and lots of happy people experiencing OttLite for the first time. The crowd favorite is definitely the Pod Lamp. The new LED products are a hit, too!

The best part is hearing all of the fabulous accents from around the British Isles. I've also made some new friends - Kerry of Lady Bug Crafts Ink. She is from Vancouver and now lives in Scotland. Her designs are so fun and whimsical. My favorite is Ruby Fairy. Here's a picture of Kerry and me in her booth. Another fun designer I found was SpangleJangle.com - cross stitch patterns that are quick, easy & super cute.

It's a little colder here than Florida - we even had snow yesterday! - but the people are warm and friendly.

Growing Plants Indoors with OttLite!

Do you feel like a budding gardener? Have you always felt like you have had the green thumb, but never had the opportunity to pursue your talent? Then it’s time to try indoor gardening!

The OttLite lamp is for crafters, readers and students alike. However, there are many other uses for this great product, most notably indoor gardening. Amazingly, the OttLite brand began because of the founders desire for indoor gardening.

The Walt Disney Corporation contacted our founder, Dr. John Nash Ott to film the growth of a pumpkin for a very important and memorable scene in the film Cinderella. After several attempts Dr. Ott discovered that if the light was set to a particular wave length, the light quality would be as close to daylight as possible. With this light setup, Dr. Ott's pumpkin made it into to full maturity, Disney got their inspiration for the coach in Cinderella and the legend of OttLite was born! I myself live in an apartment, which makes it difficult to have a garden without using my OttLite. How else can you grow plants indoors?

Initially I was confused as to where the lamps should be placed for the best results possible. I scoured the internet for information, but to no avail. That is partially why I have decided to write this article, to help those of you who are as lost as I was on the subject of indoor gardening.

What about the heat?

OttLite's Plant Bulb is fluorescent based and operates at much lower temperatures than a standard compact flourescent or incandescent bulb. Therefore it is not harmful for the plants to be close to the lamp, as it radiates much less heat. This makes it optimal for a small room or office where heat could have negative effects on the plants or the environment in general.

What about the light and its optimal positioning?

The first step in determining your lighting set up is to know how much light your plant needs. This is most easily found from the tag included with the plant from the nursery. Next, it's time to determine what environment the plant normally grows in, including the duration of light, soil type, nutrients and moisture needs.

Here are some guidelines for when you decide to purchase your OttLite Plant Light setup:

-The OttLite 20w screw in, swirl type bulb (20EDG2R) in a standard shade should be placed 1” to 3” away to achieve noontime sunlight intensity.
-At this distance the spread of the light is about 6”, which is ok for small plants. If the plant will be lit for 10 or more hours then the light can be placed further away at 12”.
-The OttLite 40w 48” linear tube (OTL4012P) in a basic white reflector fixture can be placed between 1 and 6 inches from from a bed of plants (since the light spread is so large) that need partial to full sun.
-A timer should be employed to aid in adjusting the total amount of light being delivered.
-The OttLite 13w Plant lamp (OTL13BPB) should be placed as close as 1” for full sun plants.

We showed off some of our products on Tampa Bay's Studio 10 yesterday and since it's Valentine's Day we brought some handmade Valentine's Day cards, too. Check them out -- I made them the night before, with my OttLite, of course!

On display were some of our amazing products such as our NEW Pink Telescoping Lamp, which is GREAT for Valentine's Day! As well as the Battery Task Lamp and our Bookstand Lite. Click here to watch the video and see me and Don in action!

Aaron Rose, a film director I admire once wrote:
“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary”.

When speaking of OttLite's January Rock Star Terri Kacie, that sentence would go a little more like this:
“In the right light, at the right time, everyone is extraordinary”.

Some people go beyong the ordinary, deleting the word impossible of their vocabulary and taking a huge bite out of life.

This is the case for OttLite's Rock Star of the month, Terri Kacie.

When Terri discovered a disease would confine her to a wheelchair for the rest of her life, she chose not to give up and to resume her life long aspirations of a healthy lifestyle.

Basketball? Not a problem. Hiking? She loves it!
Tennis? Terri is Nationally ranked.
Most able-bodied people (myself included) don't come close to the amount of physical activity Terri participates in.

As if it weren't enough to prove the world that she is one of a kind, Terri decided to literally reach new heights by becoming the first wheelchair-bound woman to rappel in the world.

4 Tips for Finding Harmony with Your Space

Happy New Year! All this talk of organization and improving your space inspired me to go project crazy over the long holiday weekend. Here are 4 fun and fast projects that are making my life easier and my space more enjoyable!

1) TV Cabinet Transformation – After years of squinting to see a widescreen movie on our old TV, we bought a flat screen (what a difference!!). The big question is: What to do with the TV cabinet/armoire? I took a tip from Redbook, and transformed it into a bar. By simply adding a new piece of stained plywood to the back, a mirror and some stemware holders, we now have a sophisticated bar for entertaining.

2) Vanity Bulb Beautification! – This organization update will save me over $100 in energy costs. PLUS – I can now see everything in its true color! I replaced my old bulbs with OttLite Vanity Bulbs. This quick fix has brightened up my space and is great for putting on make up and matching clothes (think black vs. blue socks!).

3) Hall Closet Cubbies – My kids' school has it right – everything has a home, and every little person has a cubbie! I got this tip from the Today Show. I used a hanging closet sweater organizer and gave everyone their own slot. Now my purse finally has a home. The lower shelves are perfect for little kids to reach and put away their jackets.

4) Gallery Wall on the Level – I love my family photo gallery wall … but what I don’t love is how they get askew and look messy. This weekend, I bought some 3M double stick foam tape, applied a little to the bottom of each picture, broke out the level and shored everything up. What a difference!

Next on my list of things I have to see: one of Gary Richardson’s productions!

This month, our OttLite Rock Star is talented pastor, storyteller, and man-of-many-hats, Gary Richardson. He has been writing and performing theatrical stories for 12 years now. Since there’s no set and production is kept to a minimum, you wouldn’t consider these the normal, elaborate kinds of musicals you’ve seen before. Gary’s theatrical storytelling captivates you so that you generate your own vision. No one set or costume will ever be the same when you, the audience member, are the one creating it.

Gary believes that stories that are meant to be passed verbally, generation to generation, and he opens up a wonderful world of theatrical storytelling possibilities.

The event was well attended and my favorite part was the online chat room. Bringing the OttLite community together was a blast!

I couldn't read at night without my Ottlite. I have had two detached retinas, one in each eye, in 1994 and 1995. One surgery was done perfectly and the other left a wrinkle in the material used to reattach the retina. Reading was difficult. When I saw the advertisement for your light I sent for one. It was the best thing I did.

Now I can read with plenty of light on the newspapers, books or magazines. There is no heat given out nor bright light, just as your advertisement proclaims.

Why is it dark so early?

It hit me when I stepped out of the bright and happy (incredibly well lit :-) OttLite office last night -- darkness. It was only 6 pm! Oh, that's right, Daylight Saving Time ended. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the extra hour of sleep, but I miss the sunlight on my way home.

Like many people wondering why we set our clocks back every fall, I consulted about.com. Here are some fun Daylight Saving Time facts:

Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the United States during World War I to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight from April to October
Starting in 2007 Daylight Saving Time is four weeks longer with the hope that it would save 10,000 barrels of oil each day through reduced use of power by businesses during daylight hours
Not everywhere in the US observes Daylight Savings Time
It's Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time (with an s)
The European Union observes "European Summer Time", similar to our Daylight Saving Time

Hi everyone ! My name is Anne-Laure.

I really wanted to introduce myself to all readers of this blog, whether you are avid customers of OttLite products, or eager to know more about our team and products.

I just entered the company as an intern on the 1st of October and am already thrilled by the amazing working atmosphere here !

I am a French junior student from Sciences-Po Paris (Institute of Political Sciences). We have to spend our 3rd year abroad either studying in a university or doing an internship, wherever we want. I looked for internships solely in the US, because it is a country I’ve always wanted to discover. I love the States (though I miss French bread and cheese), and everyone at the company is welcoming and friendly. What’s more, I’m going to learn lots of interesting stuff as I will be working in departments (Marketing, communication, International) in which I may want to work later.

So be prepared, I’m going to post on a regular basis on this blog, whether about my discovery of OttLite products, or about my experience in an American company and the main differences between ways of doing business in France and in America. Homework in Kindergarten?

My name is Shilo, and I am the Marketing Traffic Manager at OttLite. On August 24th my son Nathan started Kindergarten. He loves it! Everyday he comes home so excited to tell me about all the things he did and learned. Surprisingly Kindergarteners have homework too, so at night we sit at his desk next to his OttLite and study. Nathan knows all about OttLite. He has a black Learning Light that he decorated himself with skateboard and rock n’ roll stickers all over it.

Not only does he know that it’s a great light for reading but for color matching as well. When it’s time for bed and he wants to wear black sweatpants not blue, he will take both pairs over to his OttLite, hold them under the light and see which one is black and which one is blue.

I am so glad that Nathan is developing good learning habits so early, and we will continue to help him by having him study and read with an OttLite next to him.

What You Can See IN Your Eyes

While browsing through the web today at lunch, I found an amazing article about the eye.
You've heard the eyes are the windows to the soul, but did you know they can also be the window to your health?

MSN's article 14 Things Your Eyes Say About Your Health covers everything from bumpy yellowish patches on the eyelid to thinning brows.
Here's an excerpt from the article:

"The eye is a unique window into health" says ophthalmologist Andrew Iwach, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and executive director of the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco.

"It's the only place in the body where, without surgery, we can look in and see veins, arteries and a nerve [the optic nerve]."

The eyes' transparency explains why common eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration can be detected early with regular eye exams.

"Unfortunately, people get busy and delay not only eye exams but regular physicals. That's why eye doctors sometimes discover other issues, like diabetes or high blood pressure" Iwach says.

Confessions of an Animator

Animation is one of my passions. It has been ever since seeing the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas when I was a kid. At the time I didn’t know how the process worked, but eagerly wanted to learn! Throughout the years leading up to the present I have learned many things regarding animation and it has intrigued me even more. I ended up studying animation in college, and ultimately finding a job out of college where I am able to continue to create and learn the art of animation.

Working at OttLite Technologies gives me a large amount of artistic freedom for which I am very thankful. In college, I became interested in the process of Stop Motion Animation, which is a style of animation created using numerous photographs placed in a sequence to show movement. It is basically like shooting a film , only with a still camera instead of a video camera. It is a very difficult and time-consuming process, however the final outcome is extremely rewarding. There are many examples of this form of animation out there for the public to see including commercials (i.e. Xbox, Sony, Nikon) and films, (i.e. Coraline, The Science of Sleep, James and the Giant Peach) and even on the OttLite website! This is my new favorite OttLite lamp - the Dakota. I have the floor lamp and desk lamp in my living room. My living room isn't as posh and fabulous as the one in the cool graphic below ... more a mix of comfortable contemporary and preschooler functional :-) I love it because it is elegant, but also so very functional. The swing arm and rotating head lets me move it around to highlight whatever I'm reading or working on, which is really good for my laptop because you need a different light angle for that kind of work. Also great for before bed storytime.

New Stop Motion OttLite Video!

Here's a quick interview with Kelley:

Q. What gave you the idea to bring the OttLite to life?
A. It's got very life-like features like the swiveling neck. It almost reminds me of a Transformer or robot.

Q. What was your inspiration to do stop motion video?
A. Coming from an animation background, I utilized the various techniques used by major stop motion animators such as Henry Selick and Tim Burton, the minds behind Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas. And especially Jan Svankmajer -- a lesser known stop motion animator.

Q. How long did it take you to film all those tiny lamp movements?
A. About 5 or 6 hours and lots of angles and patience.

Q. Will there be a sequel? What will you have the lamp do next?
A. Definitely a sequel ... maybe a visit to Match.com or a lamp house party. We'll find out what kind of music the lamp likes.

A Shared Love of Books

My niece and I have always had a connection. When she was really little, it was easy -- Strawberry Shortcake dolls, my old magic set, our shared love of musicals. Now that she's 10, she is wonderfully independent and a little harder to read. When she told me she had just devoured the first two Twilight books, I jumped at the chance to read them. I then did what any loving aunt would do ... I bought her the third Twilight book.

It is so fun to have this common story, our own inside conversation. I'm on the first book ... and can't put it down. When I found out the main character Bella loves Jane Austin books, I was so excited. What a nice literary role model for my niece. However, that's where Bella's sense and sensibility ends. I don't want my sweet niece hanging out with bad boys or vampires. Though, Edward does seem like alot of fun!

And, of course, my niece reads by the light of her own OttLite lamp. I have the suspicion that it's on 'til the wee hours of the morn illuminating Bella and Edward. Maybe after she finishes the series, her OttLite will light up the fiery romance of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

Check out this new blog from craft design expert Kathy Peterson and health expert Barb Dehn, RN, NP. Craft for Health is all about the healing power of crafting. Kathy said she's had stories pouring in from all over from readers who have turned to crafting to work through grief, pain, stress and more.

There is such a healing power with crafting. When my grandmother passed away, I picked up a cross stitch needle for the first time and stitched my way out of grief. I felt connected with her somehow, by doing something she loved. Then sharing those pieces with my newborn niece and nephew really continued the circle for me.

Now that I have kids of my own, I plan to pass this tradition on to them. Crafting teaches us appreciation for creating something with our hands. In our instant-gratification society, I want my kids to learn patience and that good things take time and effort. That’s what my grandmother taught me in everything she said and did.

Artists of America - Helping Foster Children

We received an incredible e-mail from a very special artist -- Diedre Burke. She works with a group called Artists of America. Their mission is to provide art classes for America's foster children and at-risk youth. Their goal is to "improve lives, one child at a time."

When you combine a really great product with really passionate people -- you get something magical. I spoke with Vickie in the OttLite customer service group, who is one of those really passionate people! She has been with OttLite for 6 years and has handled thousands of calls.

Q. What is your favorite kind of call?

A. People telling how much their OttLite is helping them. I love that!
So many of our customers depend on our lights for reading, daily chores, puzzles, newspapers, crafting -- the things they enjoy. When their bulb goes out or they have a problem, it stops their world. I love to help them bring it back on line.

Q. How did that make you feel?

A. It makes me feel so good. I use OttLite lighting every day, but I take it for granted. For people who call in on a daily basis, it is their lifeline for doing the things they enjoy every day.

Q. Is there a caller that really touched your heart?

A. So many. But a call that I really remember is a daughter who called in for her father who lives alone. His wife had passed away. The daughter visits on the weekends and helps her dad around the house. He was without his OttLite for the whole week. He couldn’t read the newspaper or do his puzzles. She didn't know because he didn’t want to impose on her life … so he waited until the weekend. She called in on Monday and we got a bulb right to her. Our logistics group expedited it at no additional cost.

She called when they got the bulb and her father was thrilled that he could read again. Everything was back to normal.

What's Under Your OttLite?

Hearing how people use their OttLite lamps is my favorite part of my job. When someone stops me and says, "Wow! My lamp saved my sewing project!" or, "I had to buy another one because my husband stole it." I just can't stop smiling :-).

Here is a customer experience from Peggy B in New Orleans ...

"I have been a crafter for years. I actually used to take my paper outside in the natural sunlight to match them! How sad is that???? Then one day I was shopping at a JoAnns and saw the Ott Display! :) What an amazing difference when you can see the same sheet of paper side by side separated by a wall under 2 different lights! It is a happy Spring indeed! I am pleased to announce Mr. Dylan Parker! My very good friends, Rob and Eileen, just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! He really is beautiful, not that “aww he’s cute” then you leave the hospital and ask what happened to that poor child’s face – he really is beautiful!

I got to visit him when he was just 6 hours old and so new to the world. His beautiful eyes were looking at everything around him and trying so hard to focus – imagine seeing everything for the first time! He was enthralled by his tongue and his mouth, darting his tongue in and out and catching air on the tip. What really put a cheek-to-cheek grin on my face was watching his parents. Rob and Eileen are so proud, as they should be; it’s amazing to witness that joy firsthand. I had fun watching Rob change his son’s first diaper and Eileen instructing on how to do it. The happiness in that hospital room could fill the entire city of Tampa.

In order to capture this moment I decided that I wanted to create a scrapbook page for them – and Dylan. As always, Jennifer G’s site offered me some great inspiration. Jennifer’s site linked me to Kim Hughes’ site who offered this great layout for inspiration.

Of course, I changed it up a bit to format it more to my liking and capabilities, but it offers a great place to start. She also offers many more ideas for creating different cards and pages. Jewelry designer Linda Valentino shares her OttLite story and some beautiful pictures of her work:

"Before I started using the Ott-Lite my eyes were getting strained and the colors of my beaded work were all fuzzy and looked a different color.
My yellows were more like mustard color not the yellow that I have purchased at Joann Fabric -- it was muted. Then I brought home the Ott-Lite last Christmas.

"With amazement, the work looked so much life like and I use my Ott-Lite for almost everything I use. I work with it, at my studio at this time, I use it to read the newspaper and it does not hurt my eyes. The Ott-Lite does not get too hot under it like the regular light bulbs do and it also the old stuff burned little bits on the top of my head, the Ott-Lite did not do this.

"I could keep the Ott-Lite on for 4 hours a day, everyday. The renewable bulbs do not cost as much as the fluorescent bulbs and Joann Fabric carries them. I am so happy that my work appreciates that I use this too, and for all of you who have not made a decision on wheter to spend that extra 80.00 or not. Do yourself a favor, spend the money while you can still see once the eyes go you will not be buying the Ott Light you will be in a nursing home. So enjoy your life with scrapbooking, needleworks, or just like me seed beading necklaces and start enjoying your life. You are Worth it!!"

The Art of Playing

I recently had an opportunity to speak with Hank Edley from AdeptiCon – “For Gamers By Gamers”. Here is what he had to say about this year’s conference and AdeptiCon itself.

Q. Describe AdeptiCon for those who are not familiar with it?

A. It is the largest club-run mini war game convention in the country. We recently finished our 6th year and have increased our attendance from 100 people our first year to 800 currently. It is mainly a convention for adults who haven’t stopped playing with toy soldiers. It is highly detailed and teaches how to paint, sculpt and have fun competing at the same time. We work closely with Games Workshop in creating highly competitive tournaments where attendees can show off their work.

Q. How long have you been involved with AdeptiCon and what is your role?

A. This is my 5th year operationally but I attended the first year and wanted to become involved which led me to marketing and sponsorship opportunities. This is a volunteer-driven event that requires thousands of hours of time. In fact, planning for the 2009 event has already begun.

Q. What first attracted you to AdeptiCon?

A. As like most Americans, I do have a competitive streak; it’s the nature of the game. I have a lot of friends in the tournament circuit and this has given me a great venue for social networking.

Q. How important is the artistic portion? Is it more the painting and creating the pieces or the game playing?

A. The artistic portion is very important as is the sportsmanship of the game. Gamers are scored on how creative their pieces are and the painting contest is judged solely on artistic merit. There are also scores for sportsmanship during the games and how well you play with others.

Q. Do you buy your pieces already painted or do you paint them yourself?

A. Yes, I do paint my own but I have also contracted pieces out to elite painters. With young children and a demanding job I don’t have as much time to dedicate but I do paint a good chunk of my own stuff.

Q. Is there a required skill level to attend the conference or can beginners join as well?

A. Beginners are more than welcome. We offer intro to painting courses and there are always people willing to teach. As with other hobbies, we are seeing the pressures of quick entertainment such as video games and internet, but this is a hobby that teaches good skill sets.

Q. How important is lighting when creating your pieces?

A. Very, very important! Light sourcing for competitive painters is critical. You are using a base color and need proper lighting to highlight this color for better matching. On the competitive side you can spend hundreds of hours on one figure, without good lighting your eyes get tired and fatigued. Having good lighting helps when painting for long periods of time.

Q. Anything else that you would like our readers to know?

A. We have a significant amount of crossover with other hobbies that people may not think of. We frequently use craft paint and include stamping to sewing with many pieces. What makes your pieces successful is good lighting, good magnification, talent and steady hand!

Jewelry Making Makes Great Mom and Son Time

I've been floored by the creativity coming from every corner of OTT-LITE! Recently I complimented Jennifer Goodwin in our customer service department on a necklace she was wearing. She smiled that proud mommy smile and told me her son had made it for her.

Here's a quick interview with Jennifer about jewelry making with her son.

Q. Why did you start jewelry making?

A. My sister-in-law showed me how. More importantly it is quality time with my son. He’s really creative and he likes to create jewelry with me. He was 6 when we started and now he’s 8. He likes the crystals and big shiny pieces of jewelry … the big flashy beads. He doesn’t like a pattern … just whatever he likes. When he does follow a pattern, it really helps with his math since there’s a lot of counting. Plus, it settles him down. TV and video games aren’t always quality time. This is our one-on-one time. I really love doing it with him.

Q. Which is your favorite piece?

A. One of the first necklaces Dylan made for me. Plus this anklet with the shells. We were at the beach one day and he saw a hole in a shell and thought, “we can do this with our necklaces”.

Q. What’s your advice for parents who want to start jewelry making with their kids?

A. Have lots of patience and let them be creative. Even if it’s your Swarovski crystals … just let them create.

Q. How does your artwork help you with answering OTT-LITE customer’s calls?

A. Not only do I work for OTT-LITE, but Dylan and I use OTT-LITE lighting when we make jewelry. So I know how the product can really help the person on the other end of the line.

Celtic Memory Yarns for St. Patties Day

I found this fantastic blog from a woman in Ireland -- just perfect for St. Patties Day! Jo with Celtic Memory Yarns is a yarn designer and self proclaimed "fibre fiend" who talks about knitting, life in Ireland, dogs, scenery, and that constant search for the perfect colour combination.

In her St. Patties Day blog she talked about OTT-LITE Lighting! Here's what she wrote about having the perfect setting to prepare Sock Madness 2, which has just kicked off. This means that knitters all over the globe are "gathering their yarns, greasing their needles and getting everything ready":
